A few years ago, I went to another side of Japan to see Japan Sea.
Until then, though I'd seen Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, I'd never
seen it before.
　I decided to go to Oyashirazu-Koshirazu(means, parents don't know,
children don't know). That is the place where Hida Mountain Range falls
down straight into Japan Sea and where was the most difficult point or
travelers 200 years ago, because the road was cut off by the sea there.
The travelers saw the wave on the road,and had to run to pass the point
in a tiny moment of the wave down.

　For example, a mother who had kept holding the hand of her son
through the travel had to run alone there. She had to run with her son
without even looking back. This is the origin of the name.
"Let's see Japan Sea and run that point. "

　I departured.

　I arrived midnight. Slept in a sleepingbag seaside, woke up and
pass the point with my knees wet in the water. Japan sea was quite
calm. Not so difficult. I could see the highway above.
　I walked on the beach of tiny rocks. There was a fishing man.
I sat down beside him and talked. He was a neighbour who used to come
to fish in such a holiday.
"The sea is calm today, because it is spring. But, it is real
that Oyashirazu-Koshirazu is the hard point for travelers in winter."
he said.
　Talking with him, there came the third man. The old man was walking
by with a bag on his shoulder. He sometimes stopped, squatted, stood
up and started to walk again. His swinging figure looked strange for
me.
"What is he doing ?" I asked the fishing man.
"Well, he is ... ."
　The old man was a neighbour, too. Daily he worked at his company,
and in a holiday, he was walking like that to look for a jade (green
jewel).
　Acorrding to the fishingman's explanation, a description that
there are many jades at Itoi-river ( the river pours where we were
sitting) was found in a old book once. Approximately 50 years ago.
That news didn't make goldrush but "Jaderush". So many people rushed
in. Many jades were taken away from the bank, the stone walls and
the garden of houses.

　After "Jaderush", the upper part of the river (many jades are
there) became under the goverment control. Jaderush disappeared.
But, some jades falls into the river, flows to Japan Sea and reaches
at the beach by the wave. The old man was walking to look for them.
That was his hobby.

　I was impressed with the conversation. And then, came back to
Tokyo, I was very surprised. Everybody's walking around to look for
a jade in the city.
　What your jade is is another thing. I think it is valuable to
enjoy the act to look for your jade.(end)

だいぶ前のこと、ヒッチハイクで日本海を見に 行ったことがあった。僕は
それまでに大西洋を見たことはあったが、日本海は見たことがなかった。

　新潟県の端、親不知子不知（おやしらずこしらず）へ行くことに決めた。
親不知子不知と言えば、飛騨山脈がそのまま日本海にすべり落ちる、名にし
おう旅の難所だ。海沿いを続く街道が、そこへ来ると、いきなり波の洗う断
崖ではばまれている。ただ、打ち寄せた波が引く時、束の間、通ることがで
きる砂地が現れる。それまで、互いに手と手をしっかりとつないで旅してき
た親子も、そこを通る時だけは、手を離し、走り抜ける。躊躇すれば、次の
波にさらわれる。後ろのわが子を振り返ることもできない。親不知子不知の
名のゆえんである。
　日本海を見て、親不知子不知を走ろう。僕は旅立った。

　真夜中に着いた。海辺に野宿をし、朝、問題の箇所を膝まで海につかりなが
ら渡った。海はのたりのたり。旅の難所とは程遠い印象だった。上方にはハイ
ウェイが通っていた。
　砂利の浜を歩いていくと、海釣りをしている人がいた。隣に腰をおろして、
しばらく話をした。休日になるとこうして釣り糸を垂れに来るという。彼の言
うには、今は春だから海も穏やかだが、冬の海は激しく荒れ狂う、親不知子不
知も冬には本当に難所になるとのことだった。
　話していると、向こうの方から、一人の男が波打ち際を歩いて来るのが見え
た。彼は時々立ち止まり、しゃがみこんでは、立ち上がり、また歩き出す。汚
れたリュックを背負い、よろよろと歩いて来る姿は、どこか妙な感じだった。
「あの人は何をやっているんですか？」
「ああ、あの人は……」
　男は会社勤めをしている、やはり近所の住人だった。休日になるとこうして
浜をうろつき、翡翠をさがして歩くのだという。
　釣り人の説明によると、だいぶ前、日本書紀か何かの古書中に、糸魚川（い
といがわ）で翡翠（ひすい）がとれるという記述が発見されたことがあったと
いう。それが発表されると、ゴールドラッシュならぬ翡翠ラッシュが起こった。
全国から山師たちが押し寄せ、糸魚川近辺を荒し回った。実際に石垣や、民家
の使う漬物石にも翡翠が埋まっていたという。
　その後、翡翠のある上流地域は国が管理することになり、翡翠ラッシュは一
応のおさまりを見た。しかし、翡翠は糸魚川に落ち、日本海に流れ出し、それ
が浜に打ち上げられることもあるのだという。あのリュックを背負った男は、
休日にそれをさがして歩くのを趣味にしているのだった。

　その話は僕の心に印象深く残った。そうして、東京へ帰って来て驚いた。
みんな翡翠をさがして歩き回っていた。
　自分の翡翠が何か、ということもあるが、翡翠さがし自体を楽しむことも
大切だと思う。(了)
