A man was standing in the wind with fallen leaves. He drew
out a watch from his pocket and open its golden cover with
arabesque carved. There was a window on the face. He could
watch a tiny pendulum inside. Beyond it, he could also
watch a small gear wheel that was eating the woman to whom
he said goodby a little while ago. And beyond it, there
was another wheel wearing a drunk who was himself last
year. And he saw himself of teenage with a tennis racket
and little himself who was born beyond the wheel. And
beyond it, he gazed at the next for a while and stop to do.
With sound "PATTIN", he pocketed his watch and started to
walk again in the cold wind with his broken shoes little
dragging.

木枯らしの吹く中にひとりの男が立っていた。彼はポケット
から懐中時計をとり出し、黄金色に光る、アラベスクの刻ま
れたふたを開いた。文字盤にはガラス窓があって、中の機械
仕掛けが見えている。見れば、せわしなく揺れる振り子の奥
の小さな歯車のあいだに、さっき別れてきた女がはさまり、
じりじりと歯車に巻きこまれつつあった。その奥の歯車には、
酔いつぶれた去年の今日の自分がもたれかかっていた。その
わきにはテニスラケットをにぎった10代の自分が見えかくれ
していた。そのまた奥には、生まれたばかりの自分が歯車に
からみつき、いっしょにまわっていた。そして、その奥の奥
をじっと見つめた後、彼は見るのをやめた。ぱちん、と音が
した。時計をポケットに入れると、彼はふたたび歩きだした、
はらはらと落ちてくる枯れ葉の中を、穴のあいた靴の足を多
少ひきずるようにしながら。
